Gangliocytic paraganglioma is an extremely rare tumor that is usually seen in the duodenum. It has unique histologic features composed of endocrine cells with a carcinoid-like appearance, isolated ganglion cells, and spindle-shaped Schwann cells. Generally, this tumor is considered benign, because only a few cases of regional lymph node metastases and local recurrence have been reported. But in most patients, resection, including pancreatoduodenectomy, was performed because preoperative diagnosis was difficult. We present a case of a gangliocytic paraganglioma of the ampulla of vater misdiagnosed as ampullary adenoma and treated with endoscopic papillectomy. The resected specimen revealed a gangliocytic paraganglioma. All margins of resection were negative for tumor. A size of the specimen was 2.0×1.3×1.0 cm. We present this case, because gangliocytic paraganglioma is a rare tumor, and it was successfully treated with endoscopic resection. |
