ABSTRACT |
Endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD), new an alternative management of the bile duct stones, is a safe and effective sphincter reservation technique that significantly reduces the necessity for endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST). EBD might be more preferable than EST in the cases of below: first, the patients with "easy-to-treat": bile duct stones (diameter<10 mm, three or fewer stones), second, the high risk patients with large periampullary diverticulum, coaglation tendency and anatomical changes, third , younger patients, fourth, the patients who have no or weak chronic bile duct inflammation. The studies are required to evaluate results of long-term follow-up. |
